Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) During Pregnancy : Symptoms, Causes And Treatment

One of the most known and caused infections during pregnancy is Urinary Tract Infection also called as UTI. Usually, urinary tract infections occur for normal individuals too due to non hygiene maintenance of excretory parts where the rate of occurrence of UTI is much more in the case of pregnant women.

The infections caused to urinary parts like urethra (opening of urinary passage), urinary bladder (place where urine is stored until it is passed out), urinary tract (the pipeline from kidney to bladder), and kidneys are called as urinary tract infections. The infection usually spreads from affected part to other parts in the case of urinary tract infections.

Urinary Tract Infection Causes During Pregnancy

Urinary tract infection causes due to several reasons where one of them is due to partial blockage of urinary passage. Urinary tract infections are caused by normal bacteria that exist on the skin and dermal tissues which shall pass in to the urinary passage or tracts.

Usually due to pressure of growing uterus will fall on the urinary bladder and passage where there is always a chance to have a partial blockage of urinary passage in pregnant woman and hence they are easily affected with urinary tract infections.

One of the other causes is due to sexual intercourse. During pregnancy days, it is always advised not to have sexual intercourse where the left over remnants of sexual fluids, pressure caused during intercourse shall last the partial blockage of urinary passages and hence there is a chance to get affected with urinary tract infections.

The other reason is due to placement of catheters which are tubes placed in bladder to empty the bladder shall also cause urinary tract infections. Unhygienic catheters and unhealthy tube placement in the bladders shall lead to spread of bacteria through passage.

Due to growing uterus, it is difficult for pregnant woman to wipe or clean the stool normally and hence if the stool is wiped in to vagina during the process shall also cause the passage of bacteria and hence causes urinary tract infections.

Apart from all these reasons, hormones that get released during pregnancy will cause changes which shall actually predispose pregnant woman to infections. Untreated urinary tract infections shall cause kidney infections and damage in few cases.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

As urinary tract infections are caused due to dermal bacteria that get passed, there exist few similar symptoms when pregnant women get affected with urinary tract infections. Few among them are

  1. Feel to urinate very urgently and frequently. The frequency of urination increases.
  2. Affected people face difficulty to urinate and cannot feel comfortable after and before urination.
  3. People affected with urinary tract infections will feel burning sensation and cramps in lower back or lower abdomen regions.
  4. Feel burning sensation while urinating
  5. Urine shall appear cloudy or shall contain more unpleasant odor.

Urinary Tract Infection Home Remedies

There are few home remedies that shall be followed to prevent UTI, few of them are:-

  1. To have eight to ten glasses of water a day.
  2. Wipe the excretory organs cleanly.
  3. Usage of water based lubricants during intercourse.

Usually, UTI are treated with the help of antibiotics given by health provider. It is best to continue the course as per the health provider instructions even the symptoms disappear.
