You must be excited for the fact that the baby will soon be with you. Your baby now weights little more than 500g and measures about 29cm from crown to heel.

Your baby will begin moving muscles such as arms, fingers, legs and toes which cause more movements in your abdomen. When 23 weeks pregnant you will find drastic changes. At 23 weeks pregnant, you are actually way into the second trimester; the baby’s development is now slower than the first weeks.


Growth of the Baby

In this week the wrinkled skin is starting to smooth out and he’ll start to look more like a new born. His senses are becoming more sophisticated too.

Lungs and blood vessels have developed; the baby will soon start breathing as well during your week 23 pregnancy.

During this stage the baby can swallow the Amniotic fluid which later gets dispelled as urine. During and after this week the baby will be taking more fluid and sugar as supplements. Baby’s hearing is certainly improving now and it can now hear your voice as well as the sounds which happen in the surroundings as with keen ears baby is preparing for the outside world. Your doctor can see the heart chambers as well as the blood vessels of your baby on a 23 weeks pregnant ultrasound now, to see if it’s formed properly.

By pregnancy week 23 you must have gained about 15 to 20 pounds. This also brings in a visible change in the 23 weeks pregnant belly. Your uterus is probably about 1.5 inches above your navel. You may notice that your ankles and feet start to well a bit in the coming weeks or months, especially at the end of the day or during the heat of summer. You can as well feel comfortable by wearing loose clothes or trousers and make sure you clean your vagina from time to time.

It is unlikely that you will have an ultrasound at 23 weeks of pregnancy, unless there is cause for concern with your baby. If that is the case, then the ultrasound will simply determine whether your baby and body continue to develop in an expected way. You may have problems with amniotic fluid, your baby might not grow quickly enough, or perhaps there is a problem with the placenta. During ultrasound, measurements will be taken to detect the development of any of those issues. If you do need more regular ultrasounds, it is hugely important that you meet all of your appointments.
