There are 40 magical weeks to being pregnant, although you probably will only be aware of around 38 of those. Each week, something different happens to your body and that of your unborn child. You will experience different feelings, your baby will grow, your belly will grow, you will feel different and look different, and more. I believe that pregnancy is the most wonderful time in a woman’s life. It is empowering to know that you are creating life inside your body.
So if you are pregnant, let me first start by saying congratulations! You are on an amazing journey that spans 40 weeks, or three trimesters, and this is a time of your life that you should enjoy and cherish. It is during these months that you will first start to bond with your unborn baby, thinking about the person that he or she will become later on in life, with your guidance and support.
The first time I got pregnant, I didn’t know what to expect. While my friends recommended that I read the “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” books, they served their purpose but didn’t really tell me what I wanted to know. Perhaps I am a bit of a control freak, but I wanted to know what was happening inside my body, and what was happening to the body of my baby. If you feel the same way, then the following may be of benefit to you.
I will guide you through a summary of what you can expect each and every week of your pregnancy. Do remember, of course, that these are guidelines only. Every woman experiences each pregnancy differently. Some babies have growth spurts (yes, even in utero children seem to already have a mind of their own!), whereas others grow at a steady pace. However, we know scientifically that each week does something to the development of your baby.
Of course, I will also discuss some of the things of importance in terms of your health and that of your unborn baby. Each week, those needs will gradually change. While a lot of people still believe that you can eat what you want when you are pregnant because “you are eating for two” (or more if you carry multiples!), that is not actually true. What matters is that you eat in a healthy way and look after yourself. I will guide you through that on a week to week basis as well.
